Membership Overview
« on: February 01, 2006, 03:06:04 PM »

Hi guys,

I was wondering if someone could give me kind of an overview of membership in the club, and what yall do.

As a member, I presume you get to participate in operating sessions but what other types of stuff? And how often do yall do sessions?

I'm really new to the whole Club scene (I'm only 26) so not real familiar with how they work and who gets to do what type of stuff.

I moved to houston after Katrina but will be moving back in April in to a smaller apt so I won't have the space for a layout anymore and thinking of joining up to play with some trains. Smiley

thanks,
Shaun

http://www.ccmrc.com/membership.html

We try to operate the Crescent Lines as a minature transportation system.  We have the ability to do timetable operations with an adjustable fast clock.

We  are usig the "rail - op" computer program to produce manifests for kthe freight's in each session. The program tracks each car and type as well as  contents so that proper goods are delivered to the correct industry.

While we TRY to operate in a prototypical manner, we are mindful of the limitations of the layout, the power source and the operators themselves.

We try to  do a "sample" of real transportation. For instance, there is no way we could correctly model the REAL amount of tank cars in and out of a refinery, but we try to  move at least the type of moves that are made.

The Crescent Lines if fictional, but based on historical facts of the area as well as a route that would have been pieced togeather by purchasing abandoned right of ways.

we are in the process of putting togeather a higher level of standards where cars and locos are concerned.  Besides the operational standards of each car, we are trying to put a minimum standard of asthetics for the rolling stock.  With proper application of weathering of both bodies and wheels, the look of the railroad is enhanced.

While we do operate as the Crescent Lines, we have a few slots for "extras" to be run as run throughs with off road engines.

The CCMRC and the Crescent Lines are treated as two seperate organizations. The CCMRC is governed by a member elected board of directors  and officers who oversee the day to day operations of the club and it's business.  The Crescent Lines is run by the Supt. of Operations ( who is appointed by the board of directors).  Work that is done on the railroad is done only with the approval of chairmen of different groups.  This allows us to keep some standards as well as making sure people are properly trained in a task that they might want to do.

Besides the operations committee, we have  a scenery committee, an electricl committee, a trackwork committee and a construction committee which is made up of the different committe chairmen. This way any revisions or changes to the layout are reviewed to make sure it not only works, but to make sure that it fits within the structure of what the Crescent Lines actually does.

Memebers are encourage to participate in upkeep of the layout, but under the direction of the committe chairmen.

Those of us who do work on the layout do it at differing times.  Sometimes on Fridays, sometimes one of use works three days straight on a project to finish it.  Other projects can take months to complete, as long as it does not hamper operations.

Come out to the club and see for yourself .  Don't make a judgement on one visit, come out for at least 4 visits to see what we do and the cast of personalities involved.

thanks for the info. I didn't realize how involved a club can be.

I've been out to the layout for the past 3 or 4 open houses, including this past November.  Never seee an operating session though. Once I'm back in town I'll have to check one out.

One thing I don't think I've ever asked is if yall are running on DCC yet, or is everything still DC power based?

Wow.  I don't even remember posting this back in 2006.  shocked

Well, things changed and I never did move back to Metairie in 2006, but after a recent layoff we finally made it back to the city on Oct 31. My wife and I  will be renting a house for while so I think now will be a good time to join and have a nice layout to "play" on and give operations and club life a try.

I sent an email to the address on the website but haven't heard back yet. Just wanted to find out what's yall's schedule like these days? If I want to try out operating and maybe join the club how should I proceed? Maybe meet up with someone at the club one day?

Thanks,
Shaun

Shaun,

Glad to hear of your interest.  Now would be a great time to "ease" into the club for a few reasons.

We are in the last week of a huge construction project before we must stop and get ready for the Christmas show season.  While the new renovations are no where near finished, we need to clean up and get the main line rolling for the show.

Operations will resume in January after the holidays.  I will be more than happy to teach you both the layout and the operations format.

We now have one large switching section ( Natchez)  operating on DCC. Over the next year or two the whole layout will be converted.

I'll send you a private email with my phone number later tonight.
