Track Feeders for Natchez
« on: March 19, 2009, 07:46:10 AM »

As of 3-19-08 the progress of track laying is almost complete at Natchez it is time to install feeder wires.

I've ordered a single electrode handpiece for my resistive soldering transformer. After it is delivered I will use that soldering method for installing the many feeders needed. It is advised to not rely on power routed stitches for DCC and to instead gap rails behind switch frogs and to feed those rails separately. We have many switches at Natchez. The guys at the Baton Rouge club even suggested to completely electrically isolate frogs in older stitches - this can be done later if needed.

Hopefully the result of using resistive soldering will be good clean solder joints with fewer "melted ties". In the future, something that should be considered when using resistive soldering on a layout is to isolate any power supply (or control system) from the track. Since high amps (low voltage), is used for work, I'm sure damage may be done if precautions are not made. For example, if the working electrod is accidentally placed on the opposite rail it would backfeed a power system - not good.  In the case, since Natchez is not physically connected to the layout or its power system, this is a non issue.

John,

Could you start with dropping the future feeds on the section of the cat track and main on the opposite side ?I was about to ballast the main and the Cat  but will wait on you to drop feeds.

I don't plan on starting to ballast "Natchez Industrial Park"  until after Easter, or when you say you've finished an area.  What wire are you planning on using ?  We still have many rolls of wire in many colors available.  If we get togeather and mark the spots, I can at least drill holes for you.

By the way, I'm planing on using medium gray color and use a 3 bags fine  to 1 bag medium size.
All donations of ballast will be appreciated

Anyone who goes by the hobby shop, pick up something for the layout.......
a bag of ballast / a ground throw /   etc.

Just got the electrode handpiece and it doesn't have the same connector type the transformer has.
I thought the electrode would have the same spade connector as the economical solder set I already had.

Working a fix for this may take a little while - it the mean time I can use a regular iron.

With two pieces of brass tubing as connectors between the handpiece/return clip and the transformer, I was able to make good, clean solder joints on a section of track at home. Each joint took 2 seconds and didn't burn any plastic ties.

I plan on attaching track feeders with-in the next few weeks. If anyone is interested in helping let me know.

John, I appreciate your efforts on the Natchez Industrial park this past Friday night and look forward to the day we can start running DCC.

I've got a lot to learn about resistive soldering, which I plan on doing over the next few weeks in the new Natchez area.

I'll have my cell phone with me for than next big job.....
