Passenger Paint Schem
« on: March 20, 2005, 06:08:01 PM »

IDEA FOR THE TABLE - I have an idea for a modern passenger schem that I wanted to put on the table for discussion.

Our standard red base with a wide white zig-zag band simular to a purple (gray band) unit I've seen at the club.

It may be highlighted by yellow strips and lettering, if we can get yellow CL decals at no extra cost.

If yellow lettering can be obtained for the passenger locos (simular to the new shirts), a gray band may also be considered instead.

There is a web sight that paint schems can be applied to locos, I think it was called Paintshop.com, or something like that. I'll try to find it so that ideas can be tried by those interested.

TWO NEW CL GP35s ON THE WAY - I've desided to paint two KATO GP35, purchased from a former member,  into the late CL freight schem. Was "CP RED" desided for our standard red?

If you are going to paint the modern red , PLEASE , PLEASE make sure to put the white stripes on them.

The engines that were pained red without the white strips look like crap AND look toylike.

By the way, the "grey" zig zag was supposed to be silver. How the hell Guy screwed that up I don't know.

If anyone is thinking of paint for E units in passenger service you either:
a. try to mix something starting with ACL purple and adding blue to it to get it darker
b. use all E units in the "demo" paint scheme

Think of this:

1. Mike M's heavyweight collection is extensive and will take up most of the era 3 passenger operations and should have some nice steam.
2. The few streamliner cars that come on are mixed into the heavyweights with the arrival of the F units. As the steam comes complety off, the E units  ( if new )could actually be demos.
3.   The conflict is that We are not a big railroad so back in ERA 3 we would still be buying "most" of our motive power second hand so would we be painting up second hand equipment into a fancy scheme ? Seems to me the paint shop would slap a coat of paint right over someones old paint scheme so the purple would look slightly different depending on whose scheme we would be painting over.
4 Use the "bought used" E units in their previous paint scheme with just a secrion painted out and the CL put on it.

Just some thoughts and ideas.

We need to have a standards meeting soon to decide on some things like weathering and paint schemes sometime soon.

I will be dropping off at the club an Undecorated Proto2000 E8 and Alco PA.  If anyone would like to attempt a purple painting, be my guest.  I am not experienced enough to try.  I will leave them on the work table.  Just leave a note if you take them.

Thanks,
Chris

Suprisingly EMD starting producing E7s in 1945 and F7s in 1947.  This is from one on-line source.

I have used the locopaint website and have come up with several ideas for the E units that will go with the streamliners. Please check the drawings on the table at the club.

Regarding your comment about the white stripes on locos, are they on decal sheets or do they have to be painted on?

I think they are just generic white stripes   1/8 inch wide I think.

I have some stripe sheets at the club you can use.

If you have some white decals, I need those, too.  If you won't be there on Friday, just leave them out in the office where I can see them.  Thanks.

Our newest regular member, David E. has taken one of my Atlas purple F units to a body shop to see if they can mix a pint or quart to match.

As soon as we have the paint, we will have a FP9, 2 E8 shells and a E6 A&B unit to paint.
Hopefully Lenny will have time to do the painting.  The only shells that need to be stripped are the E 6 A&B units.  I have never stripped shells so I hope someone with that experience will do them now and have them ready to paint soon.

I have also been aquiring Walthers streamline cars as well as a few of the heavyweights.  I have decaled the heavyweights in yellow lettering and the silver streamliners in black decals.  Depending on how the purple paint comes out, I'm not opposed to painting the window sections in purple.

My hope is to have enough Streamliners for #5&6  ( the overnight train to Memphis ) and enough nice heavyweights for 7&8 ( the day train to Memphis.   The older Athearn heavyweights would be used for the yet named or numbered train that would make the trips to Angolia. On light traffic days ( weekdays ) we can use the 2 doodlebugs to make that run and on weekends make it a full train consist.
