2   Club / Layout Related / DCC / NCE Wireless signal issue  on: May 14, 2010, 03:18:30 PM

Since instalation of the wireless system mid 2009, we've sometimes had issues with the handheld cab establishing communication with the main controller. This cab works fine when it is plugged into the control bus not using radio communication.

The cab has since been sent back for repair and the problem appeared to be solved when we got it back.  However, as of early May 2010, the problem appears to be coming up again.

ISSUE:
At times, the only way to establish communicate wirelessly after power up (pressing E-Stop button once & waiting about a minute) is momentarily unplugged the control cable from the antenna and reconnected it.
-
When the LCD displays "LOC: XXXX" XXXX being the last engine number run on the cab, the system has established communication.

NCE said they will take another look at the problem but they also want to look at the antenna.

Dave - We probably should be adding layout wire routing somewhere in the standards.

We should be keeping the close facia (closest to the isle) clear of wires running them instead along the back (in front of the legs). This may be more important later when we run the control bus for any DCC cab system later. One of the problems Lou had was the proximity of control bus to the rest of the wiring (track & turnout power lines).  Having all those "electric noise" generating wires close to one bundle will help make them avoidable (they can cross at 90 deg.) when we run the signal sensitive lines around the layout.  Walter also suggested that this control bus be run in eithernet cable -maybe that should be in the standards as well..

Just a thought.

I'm going to try to make it to the club this week but since I have a mountain of dirt to spread and a bathroom being renovated at the house, don't count on me showing up at the club anytime soon.  I do want to replace the sinding at the club in about 2 or 3 weeks - Ken wants to help..

See ya soon,
John

After the meeting on April 23, I believe with a little patience and everyone starting to work together, the club again will be on top of its game as they say. There is a lot to be done and not a lot of man power to go around, but I know it will get done. I know this will sound harsh, but now is the time that we need everyone to pitch in to help work on the layout, and not just on Fridays, but anytime you can spare at nights during the week and weekends. Looking forward to making the Cresent Lines into an outstanding operational layout, ready for shows, operation meets, and club member operations.

So guys its time to roll up your sleeves and jump in.

Just to let everyone know, I am working on getting the new standards wrote up and printed up so everyone can see them and make any suggestions before I do a final draft. Also need input for the equipment ( cars and locos) and DCC. Know some of the cars standards, ie couplers, weight. So if anyone can think of any more for cars and ones for locomotives and DCC, please let me know.

 6   Club / Layout Related / Scenery / New Branch-Cross Timbers area  on: April 28, 2010, 12:48:18 PM

Guys,

With the new branch line adjacent to the upper main line, which goes under the Cross Timbers bridge, scenery will have to be worke on eventually.  Because the branch is also relatively close to an industrial area with sidings, I propose we develop a scenery block so these two sceens can be separated by a viewer.  I suggest we create a low hill & cut for the branch before it goes under Cross-Timbers tressle.

I thought it would be a good idea to find some images of what I think we make the sceen around Cross Timbers look like.

See the link below:
http://www.wwvrailway.com/images/CSPacrosscanyon_small.jpg

The home page for that image shows a sceen that looks like our bridge surrounded by low hills like we should be targeting.
The cut shown would be for the lower branch line however - but you get the idea.

Here's another image we could use (diffent place):

If anyone finds something on line - post a link so we can kick around ideas.  Perhaps those interested in this scenery project could make small clay reprentations of how they think the area should look like.

I think we should discuss this project so we use the best of the best ideas that come up.

7   Club / Layout Related / Electrical / Power distribution via new track feeder Bus  on: April 20, 2010, 01:18:19 PM
Started by JCoiron | Last post by JCoiron
Starting at the revised Turner City area, I am replacing the old existing spliced (sometimes redundant) runs of "bird nest" wiring with a new track feeder system more compatible with DCC (described in recent issues of Model Railroader).

This new system will includes a 10 GA. solid gauge black wire representing the "common" return (common-ground for the present DC system) and smaller sections of white wire representing each existing "block of track" under the layout. 20-24 GA. feeder wires are soldered to these larger wires to the track every 3'.

This work is almost complete in the Turner City orb which represents about 15-20% of the layout and will make trouble shooting and adding power feeders much easier when needed. The existing DC system is using this new power distribution method in certain area and the wiring now looks so much neater/simple.  Until the entire layout is transformed this way, the original DC power rotaries & toggles switch leads are temporally soldered to the white "block of track" wires.

We have a ways to go!!!!

Shaun,

Glad to hear of your interest.  Now would be a great time to "ease" into the club for a few reasons.

We are in the last week of a huge construction project before we must stop and get ready for the Christmas show season.  While the new renovations are no where near finished, we need to clean up and get the main line rolling for the show.

Operations will resume in January after the holidays.  I will be more than happy to teach you both the layout and the operations format.

We now have one large switching section ( Natchez)  operating on DCC. Over the next year or two the whole layout will be converted.

I'll send you a private email with my phone number later tonight.

Mike

Wow.  I don't even remember posting this back in 2006.  shocked

Well, things changed and I never did move back to Metairie in 2006, but after a recent layoff we finally made it back to the city on Oct 31. My wife and I  will be renting a house for while so I think now will be a good time to join and have a nice layout to "play" on and give operations and club life a try.

I sent an email to the address on the website but haven't heard back yet. Just wanted to find out what's yall's schedule like these days? If I want to try out operating and maybe join the club how should I proceed? Maybe meet up with someone at the club one day?

Thanks,
Shaun
